Identification based on gene sequencing is often faster and more reliable.
Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings will utilize SmartGene’s technology and integrated web-based services to support more rapid and precise identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens.
Some bacteria and fungi do not grow quickly or well enough in culture to allow timely, accurate identification using conventional microbiology techniques. For this reason, identification based on gene sequencing is often faster and more reliable.
SmartGene reports that its technology facilitates efficient identification, following the sequencing of specific portions of an organism’s DNA, It does this by integrating a number of tasks, including sequence proofreading, alignment, interpretation, creation of phylogenetic trees, and reports. DNA sequences are reviewed using SmartGene’s reference databases, which take account of newly characterized and emerging pathogens.
SmartGene’s databases are constructed using proprietary algorithms to extract and filter useful sequences from public repositories, and are complemented by additional private, curated reference databases.
