A nanotechnology manufacturing process with microscopic robots

Recently, Danaher announced a collaboration with Nvidia that the company says is aimed at advancing autonomous science to support new discoveries. The company described the partnership as part of broader efforts to help shape the future artificial intelligence-enabled science.

Under the terms of the agreement, the companies are working to combine Danaher’s scientific instrumentation, automation technologies, laboratory workflow software, and domain expertise with Nvidia’s accelerated computing and AI technologies. According to the company, the combined tools will help scientists move faster from prediction to experimental evidence by creating a learning cycle where experiments inform models and models help design better experiments.

Currently, Danaher and Nvidia are working to integrate AI into scientific instruments through edge computing like NVIDIA DGX Spark, accelerated analytics and data processing with RAPIDS, as well as real-time inference, scientific reasoning and foundation model technologies, including BioNeMo Open Models. Initial efforts are focused on a select group of priority instruments, with the potential to expand across a broader portfolio over time.

“We are collaborating around a shared vision for more connected, adaptive and accessible innovation, helping researchers solve consequential challenges and translate discovery into human impact,” said Julie Sawyer Montgomery, Danaher’s president and CEO.

In her comments, Kimberly Powell, vice president of healthcare at Nvidia noted that the partnership is “bringing accelerated computing and physical AI into the lab— connecting models with instruments and real experimental data, where experiments improve models and models design better experiments, helping researchers compress years of discovery into months.”

Earlier this month, Danaher announced plans to launch its first AI-powered autonomous lab, which is designed to help scientists develop custom antibodies and other molecular tools faster and more efficiently. The company said at the time that the planned lab will combine AI, robotics, and technologies from several Danaher operating companies in one connected workflow. Danaher also said at the time that the lab is part of a broader internal program to build a fleet of smart instruments that among other things are easy to integrate and control programmatically and include agentic systems designed to simplify operations, improve data quality, and generate deeper insights.
