In 2013 Karl Deisseroth and colleagues at Stanford published a new method to make intact tissue (in their case, neural tissue) optically transparent while maintaining compatibility with immunohistochemistry. The new method—CLARITY—offers researchers the ability to perform high-resolution imaging throughout the intact brain like never before. Understandably, many groups were eager to adopt the method; however (just like with any new technique), technical hurdles will be encountered along the way. The CLARITY forum is a great online resource for researchers using or attempting to use CLARITY in their work, as it allows users to exchange tips and useful knowledge related to the technique.
