The American Civil Liberties Union last month held a media briefing to announce a complaint filed on behalf of several patients challenging a laboratory’s refusal to provide them with access to their own genetic information. The complaint, to be filed with the Department of Health and Human Services, seeks an investigation and decision finding that withholding patients’ genetic information violates their rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which guarantees patients access to their health information.

Poll Question:
Do you think patients have the absolute right to gain access to their own genetic information from medical or clinical laboratories?
