Bubbling in the midst of the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles are the La Brea Tar Pits. These oozing pits of asphalt, located right in downtown L.A., are actively excavated and have produced thousands of fossil specimens that are up to 50,000 years old. If you can’t make it to visit the pits in person, make sure to check out the La Brea Tar Pits + Museum website. The site gives a detailed overview of the history of the tar pits and what scientists have found there. Additionally, it includes numerous resources for educators, including lesson plans, activities to do in the classroom, virtual visits, and information about educator workshops. The website also provides an extensive overview of the research currently being done at the tar pits, including information about current excavations, 3D models of fossils found in the museum’s collection, and information about grants and opportunities provided by the museum.
