Asterand Bioscience said today it has acquired AdeptBio, a biobank organization that specializes in procurement of human tissue specimens, for an undisclosed price.

AdeptBio’s people and supply network will be incorporated into Asterand Bioscience’s existing custom procurement offering, the buyer said, resulting in an expanded global network of more than 80 collaborating donor institutions.

Asterand Bioscience says its individually-managed custom collection service allows it to deliver human tissues, biofluids, and accompanying clinical information most compatibly with specific experimental needs of the pharmaceutical and diagnostic community.

“We are delighted to have AdeptBio join our organization,” Peter Ferrigno, CCO of Asterand Bioscience, said in a statement. “Together, we will strengthen our partnership with the pharmaceutical and diagnostic community; providing unparalleled quality samples, highly regulated collection, and tailored specifications, for their research needs.”

Added Lee Schwartzberg, M.D., founder of Memphis-based AdeptBio: “The development of new targeted therapies and companion diagnostics rely on availability of tissues, and increasingly biofluids, linked to deep clinical data. Joining AdeptBio’s network with Asterand Bioscience’s network will strengthen their ability to partner and serve the pharmaceutical and diagnostic community.”

Asterand Bioscience provides human tissue and human tissue-based research solutions to drug discovery scientists. The company was formed in 2006 through the merger of Asterand (founded 2000), a human tissue biorepository and Pharmagene (founded 1996) a human tissue-based drug discovery company. The company has offices in Detroit, MI and Royston, U.K.
