Synthesis of Bacterium’s Anticancer Warhead Described

Researchers at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography have unravelled the enzyme-driven process that activates the anticancer molecule salinosporamide, which is currently undergoing Phase III evaluation for glioblastoma therapy. The newly reported findings solve a nearly 20-year riddle about how the marine bacterium makes the warhead that is unique to molecule, and opens the door to the development of novel approaches to manufacturing new anticancer agents.
