Severe Obesity in Children Linked to Genetic Rearrangement

Starting out with a single case of a teenage European patient with severe obesity, scientists have conducted transcriptomic profiling and screened a cohort of over 1700 children to identify a chromosomal rearrangement that places a gene called ASIP under the control of a promoter that is constantly active in all cells. The identification of such rare mutations that cause obesity can improve obesity pharmacotherapy and increase our understanding of the disease.
