Study Finds Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs May Effectively Treat Ulcerative Colitis

Stanford University School of Medicine researchers found that cholesterol-reducing statins may also be an effective treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC). By tapping into publicly available anonymized patient health information, including transcriptomic data from UC samples, the team identified a genomic signature associated with UC disease, and then identified the FDA-approved statin, atorvastatin, as a potential candidate for reducing UC symptoms, based on that genomic signature.
