Lack of Vitamin D May Increase Risk of Opioid Addiction, and Sun-Seeking Behavior

Studies in mice by a Massachusetts General Hospital-led research team indicate that vitamin D deficiency strongly amplifies the craving for and effects of opioids, potentially increasing the risk for dependence and addiction. The research, through which the team also analyzed existing human data, suggested an inverse, dose-dependent relationship between VitD signaling and opioid use, independent of known opioid use triggers.
