Autism Linked to Impaired Production of Myelin
Analysis of postmortem brain tissue from patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has revealed a cellular abnormality that impairs production of myelin, a fatty substance that creates an insulative sheath around nerve fibers in the brain. This finding could create a drastic shift in the understanding of the cause of ASD and lead to novel targets for drug discovery.
