Left-Field Lessons in Immunity: Z-Nucleic Acids Stage a Comeback

Scientists unravel the mechanisms by which an RNA editing protein suppresses the lethal consequences of Z-nucleic acid induced cell death. Three independent research articles published in the journal Nature in July, 2022, show how junk RNA that forms Z-RNA can tag host RNAs in a way that allows ADAR1, an RNA editing enzyme, to inhibit Z-RNA induced activation of ZBP1 that senses left handed nucleic acids.
