Study Finetunes Bioelectronic Medicine, Specifying Efficacy of Vagal Nerve Stimulation Therapy

Scientists investigate the modulation of cortical responses elicited by vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) by the wakeful and sleeping brain states, in macaque monkeys. VNS therapy, an FDA approved therapy for neurological diseases such as epilepsy and depression, is used as an alternative or complementary to pharmaceutical treatments in diseases such as Crohn’s and rheumatoid arthritis. These preclinical findings specify the time and dose at which VNS is most effective and sets the stage for human trials.
