PIEZO ion channels sense mechanical pressure. Whereas in animals, these essential proteins are present on the surface of the cell membrane, new research shows in plant cells, these mechanosensory proteins are located on the membranes of the cellular organelle called vacuoles that play important roles maintaining cell turgor and pH and isolating harmful substances, among other roles. The authors propose that in plant cells the membrane of the vacuole has more freedom of movement than the plasma membrane and is therefore a better location for proteins that sense mechanical forces.
Scientists have developed a new technology that uses an array of microscale pillars that could help develop micro-structured cell culture substrates that can direct cell fate determination through mechanical cues and provide for therapeutic applications in both research and clinical sectors.
