CRISPR Strategy Zeroes in on Drug Target for Multiple Inflammatory Diseases

A team led by scientists at Vanderbilt University have used a new CRISPR-based strategy to identify an enzyme in the one-carbon metabolism pathway called MTHFD2, that is a potential target for anti-inflammatory immunotherapy in multiple inflammatory diseases including asthma, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and general allergy. Targeting MTHFD2 in vivo protected against multiple inflammatory diseases, supporting that the metabolic checkpoint enzyme could be a potential drug target for anti-inflammatory immunotherapy.

HIV Drugs May Be Repurposed for Blindness

A new study reports human cells can synthesize DNA in their cytoplasm and not just in their nucleus or mitochondria. An analysis of nearly 35 million people in multiple cohorts across the United States over 20 years found that FDA-approved anti-HIV drugs that block cytoplasmic DNA synthesis can protect against dry macular degeneration.
