A new imaging technology called ‘high parameter imaging mass cytometry’ developed through a collaborative effort reveals hitherto unseen details in lung pathology due to several infectious diseases including COVID-19. The new technology shows alveolar epithelial cells are the main targets of SARS-CoV-2 and that age and sex do not affect severe COVID-19 lung pathology.
