AI Finds Potential Drug Targets for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

A drug discovery initiative for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) targets has used an AI-powered platform to identify 17 high-confidence and 11 new therapeutic targets for this devastating neurodegenerative disease that currently has no available treatment that reverses or stops its rapid progress. The study scans gene expression profiles in central nervous system samples from public datasets, and motor neurons derived directly from induced pluripotent stem cells.

Complete Temporal Genetic Series Identified in Fly Visual System

A new study has determined a complete series of temporal transcription factors in the optic lobe of fruit flies. The study provides mechanistic insights into how the temporal protein series is regulated, and how they can lead to the generation of a complete set of neurons in the fly visual system. Impairment of the temporal series reduces neuronal diversity and alters brain development. The authors also show initial neuronal differentiation is comparable in fly and human cortical neurons.
