Scientists at Baylor College of Medicine have developed an innovative strategy that analyzes regions of the genome for individual-specific epigenetic markers that provide the possibility of diagnosing schizophrenia at birth. The authors tested their machine learning algorithm (SPLS-DA) on an independent dataset to reveal that it can identify schizophrenia patients with 80% accuracy. This new approach can be applied to identify epigenetic markers associated with other diseases, creating the possibility of epigenetic epidemiology.
