Mosquitoes Sterilized by CRISPR Powered Precision System

Leveraging advances in CRISPR technology researchers at the University of California, San Diego, have created a system called precision-guided sterile insect technique (pgSIT) that alters the myo-fem gene to generate flightless female and the beta-tubulin gene to generate sterile male mosquitoes. The new system checks populations of mosquitoes in the wild that infect millions each year with debilitating diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika infections. The pgSIT provides an efficient, safe, scalable, and environmentally friendly alternative next-generation technology for large scale prevention of human disease transmission.
