Summary:
Were you aware that actinomycetes are the source of about two-thirds of known bioactive compounds? How about that they are a valuable source of vitamins and enzymes? Okay, let’s start simply. Actinomycetes are a group of gram-positive bacteria that mainly inhabit soil and perform important roles in recycling compounds and degrading organic material. They are unusual prokaryotes in exhibiting filamentous growth and forming spores. They are also important sources of antibiotics. At the Digital Atlas of Actinomycetes site, visitors learn of these interesting facts and can access information and pictures of the numerous species of this class of organisms. Though technical data is a bit sparse, the pix are good, as well as the general descriptions.
