Study Uncovers How Some COVID-19 Vaccines Cause Blood Clots

A team of researchers uncovers how the COVID-19 vaccines that use adenovirus vectors trigger the rare, blood clotting reaction known as VITT. They showed that VITT is caused by highly unusual antibodies triggered by the vaccine, that stick to the platelet factor 4 protein from blood platelets, triggering an intense clotting reaction throughout the body. These findings may be used to help develop a rapid diagnostic and accurate test to diagnose VITT.
