Roughness of Silicone Implants Provokes Immune Response

Scientists compare immune responses to silicone implants with a varied degree of roughness in mice, rabbits, and humans to show that implants with an average roughness of 4 microns provoke the least amount of inflammation and foreign body response. Textured implants with surface peaks around 80 microns to over 100 microns result in an unusual form of lymphoma and fibrosis. These findings will help design safer and more effective silicone implants for surgical requirements.
