As of January 1, all French citizens are now by law organ and tissue donors unless they put their names on a National Rejection Register. As of January 4, about 150,000 people signed the register to opt out of the system. France has a population of 66 million and approximately 19,000 individuals in that country are waiting for organ donations. In many countries, such as the U.S., organ donation works under an opt-in system.
