Last month House of Representative Republicans on the budget committee voted against an amendment that would have added $51 billion over a ten-year period to the NIH budget. Also last month, Dr. Harold Varmus announced that he was resigning as director of the National Cancer Institute. In his resignation letter, Dr. Varmus hinted that budgetary cutbacks may have played a role in his decision. “As Mae West famously said, `I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and rich is better.”

Poll Question:
Do you think that budget problems are going to lead to a growing exodus of talented researchers and administrators from the NIH?
