Macular Degeneration Linked to Inability to Remove Damaged Photoreceptors

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers say they are beginning to understand what goes wrong in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Although more than 50 genes have been linked to the condition, the precise mechanism behind it is unknown. Now, new knowledge of the disrupted mechanism may lead to the development of treatments for AMD and other diseases as well.
