$150-million investment will produce APIs of Cymbalta and Cialis.

Puerto Rico Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá inaugurated the new expansion facility of Lilly del Caribe, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly. The new plant will manufacture the active ingredient in Cymbalta, an antidepressant, and Cialis, which competes with Pfizer’s Viagra. Cymbalta, a competitor of the company’s own Prozac,  is expected to be one of the main products in Lilly del Caribe’s portfolio.

The new facility comprises over 230,000 sq. ft. and brings with it an investment of over $150 million and the creation of more than 250 new jobs, according to the governor’s office.

Since 2001, Lilly del Caribe has invested over $1.2 billion in Puerto Rico, according to Eli Lilly. The company employs more than 1,700 people in manufacturing, sales, and marketing and contributes more than $358 million to the island’s economy, notes Governor Acevedo Vilá.
