The detailed examination of cellular mechanisms for multiple samples is at the heart of high-content analysis (HCA) and phenotypic screening. The ability to follow individual biomolecules within cells and observe how they affect cell morphology is becoming less tedious and time consuming due to the combination of high-resolution microscopy and image analysis techniques with high-throughput automated speeds.

Over the past several years, HCA has taken a focused aim at drug discovery through newly developed phenotypic screening assays that can generate significant amounts of high quality imaging data. In order to manage all aspects of the experimental data generated, companies have put considerable efforts into developing intuitive analysis software to not only quantify the information contained in the images but also to provide solutions for data management and data analysis following image processing.

Our panelists for this webinar will discuss their methods for phenotypic screening and their experience using high-content screening systems and software from PerkinElmer.

Our first presenter, Satish Kitambi, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, will discuss his laboratory’s newly developed cell morphology based screen to identify small molecules compromising glioblastoma multiforme, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. The screening process assesses different aspects of cell viability on primary tumor cell cultures and zebrafish using the Operetta® High Content Imaging System.

The second presentation will be given by Daniel J. Hoeppner, Ph.D., Investigator at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development in Baltimore. Dr. Hoeppner will discuss his recent work on phenotypic assays of biochemical pathways associated with schizophrenia risk.  Moreover, he will discuss his work on a cellular assay for drug screening that considers the relationships between space, time, and gene expression using the Operetta/Harmony High Content Imaging System, Columbus™ Image Data Storage and Analysis System, and TIBCO Spotfire® Multidimensional Data Visualization Software.
