To no one’s surprise the global market for single-use bioprocessing (SUB) continues to grow. This observation has been confirmed by Allied Market Research. The firm issued a report indicating the SUB market, which was valued at $2.8 billion in 2016, is expected to reach $9.3 billion by 2023, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 18.7%.

The report points out that SUB has transformed both upstream and downstream drug manufacturing operations, making bioprocessing faster, simpler, and cheaper. According to Allied Market Research, factors that are increasing the growth of SUB include a high demand for biopharmaceuticals and a rise in the adoption of disposable technologies. In addition, SUB promises to lower the risk of product cross-contamination and to reduce floor space requirements.

The report also refers to SUB challenges. It notes that certain issues, such as “extractability and leachability issues and stringent regulations pertaining to use of disposable systems in biopharmaceutical industry,” hamper the market’s growth. Extractability and leachability issues are discussed in detail one of the articles in this supplement, “Single-Use Technology: Enjoy the Upsides, Handle the Downsides”.

We trust that you will find this supplement’s other articles—“Biopharma Keeps Shifting the Steel-Plastic Balance” and “Expanding the Scope of Single-Use Technologies”—are just as interesting, especially as they pertain to your own plans to explore single-use technology.
