PK-PD Compass

  • Well organized, easy data entry options
  • Expensive (subscription-based service)
Platform: iPad/iPhone
Cost: 30-day free trial ($24.99 annual subscription)

Developed by the Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics, the PK-PD Compass app provides pharmacodynamics (PD) and pharmacokinetics (PK) calculations as they pertain to antibiotics. The goal of this information is to guide the use of antibiotics in the clinic, especially in today’s day and age of increasing antibiotic resistance. Yet, the app still warns users (in a series of disclaimers when the app opens) that the calculations are for educational use only and it cautions that the app isn’t meant to be used as a diagnostic tool. With the educational goals in mind, clinicians are likely to find the app to be informative. Users are walked through five pages of data entry to initiate the calculation: infection type, pathogen, antibiotics, the minimum inhibitory concentration, and patient information (the most involved page). The calculation results are given as percentages that represent the probabilities of attaining the given PK-PD target.
