AutismPro Creator and European Autism Expert to Present at 2nd Annual World Autism Congress in South Africa

News source: Business Wire

Virtual Expert Clinics (VEC) today announced its President and CEO Cynthia Howroyd and leading European autism expert Theo Peeters will be presenting at the 2nd Annual World Autism Congress to be held in Cape Town, South Africa from October 30 to November 2, 2006. In their seminar, entitled "AutismPro - A Digital Educational Approach for Parents and Professionals of Children with Autism," Howroyd and Peeters will demonstrate the benefits of VEC's AutismPro.com, the first online, subscriber-based guidance system for caregivers of children with autism.

AutismPro offers parents and therapists instant access to critical information about all types of clinically-proven therapies and allows them to design, manage and deliver customized therapeutic programs for children with autism. In their presentation, Howroyd and Peeters will share details about the design of the product and illustrate how AutismPro is empowering parents and professionals with the necessary tools to overcome barriers to timely intervention. Attendees will learn how AutismPro can help caregivers monitor their child's progress and adjust treatment methods with just a click of a button.

"We created AutismPro to ease the burden of parents and professionals who are under great pressure to provide timely, quality intervention in the face of a global rise in autism diagnoses," said Howroyd. "AutismPro is designed to respond to each unique child's needs, and empower families with an affordable guidance option that is accessible immediately after diagnosis."

The World Autism Congress offers parents and professionals a series of educational sessions and networking opportunities to broaden their understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and view the latest information and tools to improve the quality of life in individuals with ASD. Howroyd and Peeters' presentation will be delivered on Tuesday, October 31 at 5:30 p.m.

"Autism involves understanding the complex and challenging ways children learn and behave, and this event provides a forum for parents, caregivers and professionals from all over the world to collaborate on best practices in the field," said Peeters. "AutismPro offers caregivers the first comprehensive tool that brings together various clinically-proven treatment methods. It also fosters a greater understanding of autism and the wide range of available curriculum and treatment options."

Before founding VEC, Howroyd was a speech-language pathologist working with children with autism and the president of the Speech and Learning Institute in Fredericton for 15 years. She created AutismPro after recognizing parents' frustrations and the need for efficient and affordable guidance. Understanding how the Internet, expert system software and e-learning could be combined into a single solution, she recruited a team of world-renown autism experts to help develop AutismPro. She has raised approximately $4 million to fund the development of this patent-pending technology and extensive multimedia content.

One of the most well-known autism experts in Europe, Peeters founded the Opleidingscentrum Autisme (OCA) in Antwerp, Belgium in 1980. He has led the training of all professionals in the official experiment in autism in special education, sponsored by the Flemish Ministry of Education. He and his collaborators were also responsible for establishing the first autism intervention training courses in most European countries as well as outside Europe. Peeters has published several books on autism, including Autism: From Theoretical Understanding to Educational Intervention.

The launch of AutismPro was announced earlier this week at the Geneva Centre for Autism International Symposium in Toronto (please see "AutismPro Offers New Hope to Parents of Children with Autism").
