Waters Purchases Thar Instruments for SFC Technology

GEN News Highlights

Waters acquired Thar Instruments, a supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) manufacturer. The transaction follows an equity investment in Thar made in June 2007.

Thar products are used in pharmaceutical, life science, chemical, and petrochemical companies as well as government agencies, research institutions, and universities.

Waters reports that Thar’s current annual revenues are approximately $18 million and expects the acquisition to be neutral to 2009 earnings.

Thar’s SFC and extraction systems are used to separate, isolate, and quantify chemical compounds. Since SFC typically uses carbon dioxide as the main mobile phase, it is considered a green technology, as carbon dioxide offers environmental and cost benefits compared to liquid chromatography solvents.

“Complementing Waters Acquity™ UPLC™ environmental position of reduced solvent use without compromised analytical capabilities, SFC expands Waters green separation science leadership, as customers increasingly demand environmentally friendly options,” comments Rohit Khanna, vp, worldwide marketing for Waters.
