Rules, Regulations, and Judging Procedure

  • The contest will run from XX/XX/XX to XX/XX/XX, 2009.
  • All entries must be submitted electronically by midnight, XX/XX/XX.
  • You can enter as many times as you like up to once a day.
  • A clue will be provided every XX, starting XX/XX/XX.
  • Submissions of solutions will be made on a xx cell grid that exactly corresponds to the cells of the cryptogram.
  • A correct solution must have a value assigned to each cell in the solution sheet.
  • Dr. Peter Johnson, creator of the cryptogram, will be the judge.
  • A sealed solution will be held in escrow.
  • Evaluation of submissions will occur on a rolling basis.
  • Entries will be compared to the original answer key. Employees and families of GEN and Scintellix will be ineligible to win.
  • The first solution sheet that correctly contains the encrypted message in the appropriate cells and all other cells labeled properly will win the contest.
  • The winner will receive a check for $1,500.
  • The winner will also be featured in the XX/XX/XX issue of GEN, so they need to agree to be interviewed, photographed, and have their name and affiliation published.
  • The first 150 registrants will receive a T-shirt depicting the cryptogram.

Terms of the Contest

  1. General Conditions: All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. Those who enter the contest agree to abide by the terms of these official rules and by the decisions of Genetic Engineering & Biotech News (GEN) and Scintellix, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to the Cryptogram Challenge (contest).
  2. Prize: One check in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded. The winner is solely responsible for the reporting and payment of any tax liabilities incurred. For purposes of compliance with tax regulations, the winner must provide his or her social security number or taxpayer ID to claim the prize. Only the winner will need to provide this information.
  3. Winner Notification: The winner will be notified via email a week after the contest closes. The winner will be required to respond to the email.
  4. Release: By entering the Cryptogram Challenge, each entrant releases and holds harmless GEN and Scintellix agents as well as their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions, advertising, and promotion agencies from: (i) any incorrect or inaccurate information caused by any technical or human error that may occur in the operation of the contest; (ii) any problems or technical malfunctions (errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, delays in operation or transmission, etc.) of any computer, online system, server or provider; (iii) any failure of email on account of internet traffic congestion (proof of transmission does not constitute proof of delivery); or (iv) any stolen, misdirected, incomplete, lost, late, or ineligible entries.
  5. Termination: If, at any time, GEN or Scintellix is unable to operate the Cryptogram Challenge as planned (due to financial or administrative difficulties, fraud or technical failures such as a computer virus/ bug, or any other form of unauthorized intervention that corrupts the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this contest), GEN and Scintellix reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to suspend, modify, or terminate the contest.
