A Gallup poll in March revealed that a majority of Americans now believe that economic growth should take precedence over environmental protection. This marked the first time since the organization began asking this question 25 years ago that the concern over the environment took a back seat to the economy, according to Gallup. In 1984, 60% of those polled chose the environment; this year that number dropped to 42%, most likely due to the to the year-long recession.
