Regulating Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology leverages engineering principles to create novel biological systems or to redesign existing ones. Questions have already been raised regarding the safety, ethical, and social impact of synthetic biology. For example, one fear is that the technology could be used to create an organism as an instrument for bioterrorism. What’s your view on regulating this field?

How do you believe synthetic biology should be regulated?

Use existing regulatory framework structures
Consider additional levels of regulatory oversight
Allow the scientists to regulate themselves
