There’s a bug going around. According to the CDC, cumulative influenza hospitalization rates were 8.1 per 100,000 people on the week of January 4—high for this time of year—and, according to the NY Daily News, nearly 20,000 cases of influenza have been reported in New York this season, whereas 4,404 cases were reported last year.
