Recently the U.S. Senate attempted to pass legislation that would expand the ability of terminally ill patients to gain access to experimental medicines. So far 28 states have passed “Right to Try” laws, allowing patients to circumvent the long drug development process. If ratified, this new bill will cut through much of the bureaucratic red tape patients experience when they are not eligible to obtain an experimental therapy through a clinical trial and petition the FDA for compassionate-use status.
