Craig Venter and his scientific team recently reported the creation of the first “synthetic cell.” Some researchers have labeled the achievement a revolutionary step toward the production of new biofuels and inexpensive vaccines and biotherapeutics. Others claim the experiment has been overplayed and only represents a significant technical advance; they believe that the realization of synthetic biology’s promise will occur over the long-term.
