BIOBANKING TRENDS, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES

8/20/2010

Donat Elsener, Founder, Innoco GmbH, and Director of Business Development, Hamilton Storage Technologies

Biobanking increasingly is seen as an essential tool in translating biomedical research into real improvements in healthcare. Broadly speaking, a biobank (or biorespository) is defined as a collection of tissue samples and is, potentially at least, a rich source of both genetic and clinical data.

A relatively new field with promising expectations, biobanking presents a host of opportunities and challenges. During this week’s podcast Donat Elsener, a biobanking expert, takes a close look at these and other aspects concerning biobanks. He also talks about what kinds of institutions are developing biobanks and why they are doing so. In addition, Elsener describes the types of samples being held in biobanks and the storage limitations of those samples.

Elsener discusses the kinds of technology and equipment that are required to establish a large biobank and gives some examples of several successful large biobanks that are up and running.

Donat Elsener is the founder of Innoco GmbH, a Switzerland-based consulting firm. In addition, Elsenser serves as director of business development for Hamilton Storage Technologies. Biobanking and lab automation are among his fields of expertise.
