GEN’s editor in chief, John Sterling, interviews life science academic and biotech industry leaders on important research, technology, and trends. These podcasts will keep you informed with all the important details you need.

The biobanking market is poised to expand as researchers continue to migrate toward the use of human tissues and biomaterials for primary research, and pharmaceutical and diagnostic-tool development. Facilities range from individual research laboratories to hospitals, academic centers and commercial entities, all involved in the collection of human tissues and biomaterials.

During this week’s podcast, biobanking expert Dr. Jim Vaught discusses how and why the biobanking and biospecimen research field has grown so rapidly. Based on his experience at the NCI, he talks about what has led to the development of biobanking best practices at NIH and ISBER and elsewhere. He answers questions such as how do researchers locate samples for their research and if there is a central database or web links that investigators can use. Dr. Vaught also describes what the world of biobanking will look like in the future.

Dr. Jim Vaught is the Deputy Director of the Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research (OBBR). Dr. Vaught has been working in the field of biorepository and biospecimen science for more than 15 years. In 1999 he was one of the founding members of the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), and was its second president. Dr. Vaught is the new incoming editor-in-chief of Biopreservation and Biobanking, a journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
