Wyeth Implements Drug Discovery Technology from Tripos

  • Wyeth Discovery Research scientists are now using Tripos International’s Benchware® Discovery 360 system (v.4.0). Accenture, a global management consulting and technology services company, also played a role in the joint project.

The goal was to improve Wyeth’s abilities to discover new drugs and make better use of research data,” David Lowis, senior director of product management at Tripos, told GEN at the Tripos exhibition booth shortly after the announcement was made at the annual “Drug Discovery and Development of Innovative Therapeutics” conference in Boston.

“We wanted to eliminate manual manipulation of data and the use of multiple tools,” Lowis continued. “Benchware Discovery 360 allows the scientists to accomplish this.” The system gives scientists a single point of entry from which they can access and analyze data from disparate enterprise repositories and share the knowledge gained, according to Lowis. “It used to take the Wyeth scientists five to eight hours to get a data set from multiple sources,” pointed out Lowis. “Now they can do it in a matter of minutes.”

The initial deployment and user training for Benchware Discovery 360 was provided to 250 scientists and will be deployed to all 1,200 discovery scientists by the end of 2008, said Lowis. In addition, Tripos continues to work with Wyeth to implement new data analysis and visualization capabilities. “We anticipate that this application will have a significant impact not only on the speed and efficiency with which our scientists can access, share, and asses data but also on the overall data packages we’re are able to generate for our research,” commented Frank Walsh, Ph.D., executive vp of discovery, Wyeth Research.
