VWR Set to Acquire Peqlab Biotechnologie

  • VWR International agreed to acquire Peqlab Biotechnologie, including its subsidiaries and operations in the U.S., U.K., Austria, and its Clemens manufacturing operation in Germany. Peqlab is involved in the development, manufacture, and supply of molecular and cell biology reagents, consumables, and instruments for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

    “Peqlab is recognized in Germany and beyond as a specialist distributor of life science products, including the Peqlab brand product range,” noted Manuel Brocke-Benz, VWR’s president and CEO.

    Last year VWR bought U.S.-based United Biochemicals and Turkey-based Prolab.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.
