PPD to Invest $18M to Expand Contract Research Operations into Ireland

  • PPD plans to invest $18 million to expand contract research operations into Athlone, Ireland. will initially establish a cGMP analytical testing laboratory to meet growing client demand in Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

    PPD expects to begin operations by the second half of 2009. The plan will create 250 jobs for scientists, analytical laboratory staff, and other clinical development professionals, according to PPD.

    Analytical testing services will be offered in method development and validation as well as stability and quality control testing for all phases of drug development—with particular emphasis on inhalation and biopharmaceutical products.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.
