Osmetech to Use Qiagen Assay Technology for Respiratory Infection Test

  • Osmetech signed an agreement with Qiagen to develop an in vitro diagnostic test for respiratory infections.

Osmetech will adapt Qiagen’s QIAplex-based respiratory viral test for use on its eSensor XT-8 molecular diagnostics system. Qiagen will supply QIAplex-based reagents for the multiplex amplification of the most common viruses associated with respiratory infections.

Qiagen recently launched the QIAplex-based ResPlex II respiratory panel for research use only. It allows for detection of up to 17 different viral molecular targets.

Osmetech intends to leverage this assay technology and develop a test for hospitals.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.

Do you agree that ecstasy should be studied for its potential therapeutic benefits?
