  • Lonza is buying Moda Technology Partners, a Pennsylvania-based company offering a mobile data-acquisition platform designed to automate the quality control of regulated manufacturing processes including pharmaceuticals. The company has been using Moda’s technology in its own manufacturing operations and says that it will now expand deployment globally across all its plants.

Lonza believes that the purchase will strengthen its Rapid Testing Solutions platform by adding a complementary product for QA and QC in life sciences. “Moda’s technology provides an excellent fit with our recently expanded informatics platform, building upon our industry-leading WinKQCL® endotoxin and analysis software,” comments Doug Danne, head of Lonza’s Rapid Testing Solutions business unit.

The deal also fits in with the two companies’ common vision for a comprehensive, automated informatics platform, adds Moda’s CEO, Mike Desiderio. “We have always believed that the ability to use quality data as a proactive and responsive agent in the improvement of regulated manufaturing would mark a positive turning point in the state of the industry. In partnership with Lonza, this ideal is now a reality.”

Moda’s software solutions are designed to help companies reduce and eventually eliminate the need for paper-based, labor-intensive QC microbiology programs, with workflows and device integration for environmental monitoring, utility testing, and product testing. The firm’s flagship software, MODA-EM™, is a paperless environmental monitoring solution designed to automate quality control microbiology data collection and management, including utility and product testing.

MODA-VIP™ is a visual analysis tool that correlates production-related information with a floor plan of the physical facility. The product plots environmental monitoring, utility monitoring, and other production information over a specified date range. It then filters that information based on criteria such as sample type, organism type, or severity level.

The MODA-FDC™ solution is designed to efficiently collect, label via barcode, and track environmental monitoring as well as utility and product bioburden test samples. MODA-FDC comprises the MODA-EM client software, a rugged tablet PC, barcode scanner, barcode printer, badge reader, and stainless steel cart that can be used to store and transport sampling media and equipment such as airborne particle counters. The entire configuration including PC, peripherals, and cart can also be sanitized using standard chemical disinfectant, the firm points out.

In March Moda and heipha Dr. Müller, a specialist manufacturer of culture media for microbial diagnostics in the pharmaceutical industry, launched heipha-EM as a solution to help  streamline automation of the QC micro processes. Heipha EM integrates the MODA-EM platform with ready-prepared, prebarcoded culture media plates from heipha.
