Laboratoires Fournier Licenses Gene Regulation Database

  • Laboratoires Fournier has gained access to Biobase’s eukaryotic gene regulation database, under a license agreement between the two companies. The company will use Transfac for therapeutic applications in the fields of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

The Transfac database contains information on over 8,700 transcription factors, their binding sites and derived nucleotide distribution matrices, and the genes they regulate. Manually curated since 1997, Transfac aids researchers in identifying and analyzing transcription factor binding sites as well as visualizing, interpreting, and predicting gene regulatory networks.

Scientifically Studying Ecstasy

MDMA (commonly known as the empathogen “ecstasy”) is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which is reserved for compounds with no accepted medical use and a high abuse potential. Two researchers from Stanford, however, call for a rigorous scientific exploration of MDMA's effects to identify precisely how the drug works, the data from which could be used to develop therapeutic compounds.

Do you agree that ecstasy should be studied for its potential therapeutic benefits?
