Peter G. Schultz, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute, ranks first in a listing of the leading translational researchers in 2013, according to a study by Nature Biotechnology. James M. Wilson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the gene therapy program, department of pathology and laboratory medicine, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, comes in second.

The table was based on the total number of patents (U.S. and European) awarded to each of the 20 scientists in the listing.

Dr. Schultz, whose lab is interested in the biologically inspired synthesis of molecules and molecular assemblies with novel physical, chemical, or biological properties, tops the chart with 93 patents. Dr. Wilson follows with 90.

Dr. Wilson, who is also editor-in-chief of Human Gene Therapy, published by Mary Ann Liebert, heads a laboratory that focuses on the development of gene transfer vectors and their application in the treatment of a variety of acquired and inherited diseases. Another major Wilson team effort is the development of genetic vaccines against a number of biologic weapons and emerging infections such as Ebola virus and the SARS coronavirus.
