Dr. Norman Borlaug to Celebrate 93rd Birthday

  • Norman Borlaug, Ph.D., the father of the “Green Revolution,” turns 93 on Sunday. Winner of the Nobel Peace Price in 1970, Dr. Borlaug is credited with helping to save the lives of more than a billion people from starvation. As a plant geneticist and biologist, he played a major role in the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties of wheat that were subsequently introduced into developing countries around the world.

Dr. Borlaug was born in Cresco, Iowa, in 1914. He received a B.S. in forestry from the University of Minnesota in 1937 and an M.S. (1940) and Ph.D. (1942) in plant pathology from the same institution.
