Merck KGaA’s life science division EMD Millipore will purchase Germany-based mammalian cell culture products specialist Biochrom for an undisclosed price. Millipore says the acquisition will strengthen its process solutions business by adding complementary cell culture media and buffers, including serum-free products, to the existing protfolio. The plan is to retain Biochrom’s operations in Berlin, and integrate the firm’s activities into the Millipore process solutions business unit.

“With Biochrom we have a great opportunity to deliver an expanded portfolio of cell culture media products to our global customers and address a growing demand for ready-to-use liquid solutions that drive safety and efficiency in the development and manufacture of clinical and commercial drug materials,” comments Robert Yates, head of the Merck Millipore division.

Biochrom reported sales of some €13 million (roughly $16 million) in 2011, and has about 60 employees.
