Modern Peptone Manufacturing Makes a Difference

Peptones from the Solabia Group represent 45 years of strategic activity and savoir-faire. As key components in industrial fermentation, they contribute to varied productions from probiotics to vaccines to bacterial metabolites specific to cosmetics. While often perceived as substitutable commodities with similar names, this misconception can have significant consequences. Peptones differ as a function of the producer’s manufacturing experience, subtle differences in manufacturing protocols, the raw materials themselves, and, perhaps most importantly, the production site itself and its level of technical advancement. The more modern the site, the greater likelihood it can produce consistent, quality peptones time after time.

About the Company

Unlike others in the industry, Solabia possesses two separate peptone manufacturing sites.

Solabia’s production site for EDQM-certified meat peptones in BSE-free Brazil complements its plant and casein production site in France and establishes the unique separation of animal tissue, a critical element of quality assurance. Meat peptones continue to be used in nearly all market segments yet the number of producers has dwindled, in a large part due to traceability, certification, and cross-contamination issues at single production sites.

To better support its U.S. customers, Solabia Inc. was established in 2011 and carries significant inventory to reach both high volume and occasional peptone users.

Capabilities

Solabia’s plant and casein production center in France (top photo) is characterized by a closed system and advanced computer controlled processes including best-in-class modern reactor design, which result in greater peptone consistency and improved attributes for clarity, stability, and color. This production site alone underscores Solabia’s long-term commitment to the industry whose members prize above all vendor reliability and performance consistency. The sensitivity of this high-tech production atelier has enabled Solabia to achieve better reproducibility and batch consistency by highlighting operations that are critical to performance. Investment opportunities in 2016 reinforce the viability and capacity of this site.

The Brazilian operation (left photo), with similar production tools and inherent separation with the plant peptones manufactured in France, contributes enormously to the Solabia portfolio by increasing production capacity, insuring risk mitigation, and reinforcing the impossibility of animal contamination of plant peptones. Staffed by nearly 70 technologically savvy and enthusiastic professionals, the 14,000 m2 factory found at Solabia Biotecnologica has been validated through numerous pharmaceutical and diagnostic sector quality audits.

Markets Served

Industrial fermentation now gravitates around five basic trends :

Trends in Industrial Fermentation Substrate Use
Non-Animal: Out of BSE concerns, use of plant material (soy, potato, pea)
Non-Allergenic: Excludes soy, a common raw material
Non-GMO: Excludes soy, wheat, and corn as raw materials
Dairy-free: Excludes casein and milk as raw materials
Kosher/Halal: Rare when encompassing all of the above

Solabia can supply products in all categories of the current trends, a rare feat among producers. With the presence of a continuous Kosher certification for peptones, this activity has evolved to Kosher Pareve peptones manufactured by Solabia for the probiotics and food fermentation markets needing a higher certification level.

Solabia peptones contribute to the manufacturing of some of the world’s most widely known probiotics and starters, and the special attributes of these peptones are aiding the launch of entirely new ranges of probiotic and specialty enzymes worldwide. Taking that certification one step further, the company has embarked on a Halal certification program, anticipated this year.

The unique aspects of Solabia’s two state-of-the-art production sites provide clear benefits that can be summed up in a powerful descriptive: High capacity, high potential, low risk.

Large volume and occasional users are treated with the same ease. Risk mitigation and production redundancy for strategic products (i.e. Tryptone) address issues few in the industry can match, and while many are limiting their product lines or eliminating animal products, Solabia’s complete peptone line remains as timely as ever. See how raising the standard can impact on your fermentation process and why modern peptone manufacturing does make a difference
