Setting a New Standard for Modern Peptone Manufacturing

Present in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biotechnology, and microbiological diagnostics, the Solabia Group is characterized by 45 years of experience and a commitment to innovation and quality. This is reflected in three R&D centers and four highly specialized production units, with two dedicated to peptones. Solabia expertise has resulted in a complete product line that today features animal (bovine and porcine), casein, and plant origins. This profile has helped Solabia become a premier European source of peptones to a wide spectrum of the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries with an emphasis on vaccine manufacturing, diagnostics, and industrial fermentation. The U.S. market now benefits from this established supply channel through Solabia US Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary located in New York. Peptones from Solabia are available immediately with inventory and technical service now operational locally. This comes at a particularly appropriate moment, with an American market in search of new outlets, product diversity, and unique specs.

About the Company

Solabia was founded in 1972 and has since served the biopharma, cosmetic, nutrition, and diagnostics sectors with high quality and technical service. In 2000, the company established a second production site for pharmaceutical production in BSE-free Brazil, and in 2007 dedicated a separate line to the production of EDQM certified animal peptones. This separation of animal tissue from the plant and casein manufacturing is unique to the peptone industry, an important added value in terms of quality assurance and traceability particularly in pharmaceutical circles. Solabia US Inc. was established in 2011.

Parallel to the transfer of meat peptones to Brazil was the Koshering of the French facility in order to respond to the unique needs of the agro-food fermentation marketplace. All Solabia plant peptones and two of its Casein peptones are Kosher certified on a continuous basis. This translates into greater stocks and no waiting time due to the absence of production “campaigns”. Taking that certification one step further, the company has embarked on a Halal certification program, anticipated for early 2016.

Markets Served

Solabia’s wide range of complementary, in-house manufacturing activities in areas important to peptones provides precious insight into customer needs. Expertise in peptone associations have played a critical role in developing innovative culture media while several base products in cosmetics are produced through fermentation, all using peptones produced in-house at Solabia. Cell culture is now helping develop and optimize different products for skin cosmetics, and Solabia’s low endotoxin plant peptones are contributing to these efforts.

The Kosher and Kosher Pareve peptones produced by Solabia have found their application within the probiotics and food fermentation markets where high certification levels are necessary for marketing the final product. Solabia peptones contribute to the manufacturing of some of the world’s most widely known probiotics and starters, and the special attributes of these peptones (GMO-free, allergen-free, animal-free, dairy-free…), are aiding the launch of entirely new ranges of probiotic and specialty enzymes worldwide.

Capabilities

The peptone manufacturing units, characterized by a totally closed system and modern, computer-controlled hydrolysis tanks (see picture), are second to none and represent best-in-class modern reactor design that result in greater peptone consistency and improved attributes including clarity, stability, and color. This also demonstrates the long-term commitment of Solabia to the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries, which prize above all vendor reliability and consistency.

The unique separation in production sites allows Solabia to concentrate on high volume products, but also on a wide range of animal and plant products, including more unique references, like Broadbean and Lupin peptones. The French production facility can produce up to 300 tons while the Brazilian animal facility is nearly equivalent. In addition, special consideration has been made for Tryptone, one of the most widely used of all peptones; redundant protocols in place at both facilities insure the constant availability of this highly strategic product in the event of any crisis that would normally cripple most other producers. This kind of forward thinking has always kept Solabia customers insulated from market fluctuations that have affected raw materials and finished products alike.
